Tower History
The William Penn Fire Tower is more than a scenic overlook. It's an important piece of Berks County history.
Completed in 1939, the tower was constructed on the former site of the Gravity Railroad Tower, which was destroyed by fire in 1923. Designed by local architect Grover Cleveland Freeman, the structure was built using stone sourced directly from Mount Penn, connecting the landmark to the mountain itself.
In 1999, the William Penn Fire Tower was added to the National Historic Lookout Register, recognizing its historical significance.
Today, dedicated volunteers help preserve the tower and share its history with visitors, ensuring future generations can continue to enjoy this treasured Reading landmark.
